Product Description

Integrating Diversity & Inclusion into the Hiring Process Main Modules Full Program is a comprehensive online training that includes all three modules in this series.

MODULE ONE: Identifying Unconscious Bias as a Potential Barrier for Diverse Applicants

MODULE TWO: Strategies for Integrating Cultural Competencies into the Interview Process

MODULE THREE: Potentially Sensitive Interview Questions and How to Handle Them

This training focuses on race/ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and size diversity. It identifies unconscious bias and barriers for diverse applicants in the interviewing and hiring process―the critical point that determines whether diverse individuals are brought into an organization or kept out. It also identifies cultural competencies and skills that are needed in these situations.

  • You will have 90 days to complete the self-paced course(s).

  • Interactive activities and quizzes throughout the training.
  • Examples of unconscious bias are provided from diverse perspectives.

What This Training Is and Is Not

This training is grounded in decades of Lila Kelly’s research and experience in diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and the hiring process. It includes a variety of examples of situations where unconscious bias can exist, both at individual and systemic levels. Most of these examples can exist whether interviewing applicants or meeting new customers, patients, students, or their families.

This training is not just a video. It is designed for the active learner to think more deeply about these issues and involves reading text, watching short videos, and responding to activity questions and quizzes.

This training is not a quick fix. Effective DEI work takes time, and this training is a great starting point that includes ideas and suggestions for continuing to raise awareness, eliminate bias, and make sustainable changes in your hiring process.

Audience

Managers, supervisors and other interviewers.

“A lot of my supervisors don’t want to admit that they may not be prepared for an interview with a protected class candidate. Having the information be presented in an online format allows them to learn despite feeling vulnerable about their lack of knowledge. The videos of diverse candidates have been really helpful. Candidates brought up solutions to interview and on-boarding situations that I never thought of before. I would recommend this to others as a quality part of professional development for supervisors and HR professionals.”    ―Tirzah McPherson, Inclusion Administrator, County Government

MODULE ONE: IDENTIFYING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS AS A POTENTIAL BARRIER FOR DIVERSE APPLICANTS

MODULE TWO: STRATEGIES FOR INTEGRATING CULTURAL COMPETENCIES INTO THE INTERVIEW PROCESS

Module Two defines the skills and cultural competencies needed for interviewing and hiring diverse applicants. Methods are discussed for integrating diversity and cultural competencies into the interviewer’s style and the structure of the interview process. It examines interviewers’ expected responses to commonly asked interview questions that may go unmet due to unconscious bias, and explores alternative methods for asking inclusive interview questions.

MODULE THREE: POTENTIALLY SENSITIVE INTERVIEW SITUATIONS AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM

Module Three reviews sensitive information that should not be discussed in interviews, but sometimes is anyway (perhaps initiated by the interviewee). It examines diversity-related questions that applicants may ask, appropriate responses for interviewers to provide, and methods for interviewers to address diversity during an interview. Participants gain additional insights from diverse perspectives, related to the work environment and interviewers’ behaviors, for creating a more effective and welcoming interview experience for all.
