TRAIN-THE-TRAINER PROGRAM
Grounded in the Interview Process and Expanding Cultural Competence Across Front-Line Roles

The Train-the-Trainer Program enables your organization to deliver this impactful training internally to hiring managers, interviewers, and front-line staff. Certified Trainers are equipped to facilitate using our training modules with the blended learning format or an approach tailored to your organization’s needs.
The training modules provide real-world examples of unconscious bias and how it can show up during the hiring process and in front-line interactions. The in-person workshop component supports trainers in identifying bias among their teams and individual staff, guiding them to deepen their understanding and translate learning into meaningful action toward more inclusive and equitable practices.
The program incorporates videos and quotes from diverse individuals, drawn from Lila Kelly’s research and over 25 years of experience in diversity, hiring, and career transition. It also includes activities and discussion prompts to engage learners. Trainers gain strategies for leading conversations on sensitive diversity-related topics and learn how to navigate these discussions with confidence and care.

“This Train-the-Trainer program was a game-changer for me. As a talent acquisition manager, it has equipped me to elevate my team’s interviewing skills, ensuring we’re not just identifying top talent, but also creating an exceptional and inclusive candidate experience that aligns with our core values of belonging and inclusivity.
The program’s modular structure was highly effective. Module One helped us identify unconscious bias, while Module Two focused on integrating cultural competencies. Module Three provided us with the practical skills to handle sensitive interview situations with confidence.
This training has given us the tools to build a more equitable hiring process, positively impacting both our team’s performance and the overall candidate experience.”

Integrating Diversity & Inclusion into the Hiring Process
Three Main Modules:
This comprehensive three-module program includes race/ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation diversity.
MODULE ONE: IDENTIFYING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS AS A BARRIER FOR DIVERSE APPLICANTS
This first module defines bias and culture and identifies unconscious bias related to cultural diversity at both the individual and system levels. It presents numerous examples of bias from diverse perspectives and explores ways systemic bias can exist in an interview team and the hiring process. Methods are presented to help interviewers eliminate bias and lift barriers for individuals of diverse backgrounds. It consists of lessons 1-4.
Lesson 1: Identifying Bias in the Interview Process
Lesson 2: Moving Bias to a Conscious Level
Lesson 3: Eliminating Bias on the Interview Team
Lesson 4: Lifting Barriers for Diverse Applicants Caused by Unconscious Bias
MODULE TWO: INTEGRATING CULTURAL COMPETENCIES INTO THE INTERVIEW PROCESS
This module defines the skills and cultural competencies needed for interviewing and hiring diverse applicants. Methods are discussed for integrating diversity and cultural competencies into the interviewer’s style and the structure of the interview process. It examines interviewers’ expected responses to commonly asked interview questions that may go unmet due to unconscious bias, and explores alternative methods for asking inclusive interview questions. It consists of lessons 5-8.
Lesson 5: Skills and Cultural Competencies for Interviewing
Lesson 6: Integrating Diversity into the Interviewer’s Style
Lesson 7: Integrating Cultural Competencies into the Structure of the Interview Process
Lesson 8: Developing Structured and Inclusive Interview Questions
MODULE THREE: SENSITIVE INTERVIEW SITUATIONS AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM
Module Three is designed to help interviewers avoid uncomfortable diversity-related interview situations, as well as discrimination and potential legal trouble. This course reviews sensitive information that should not be discussed in interviews, but sometimes is anyway (perhaps initiated by the applicant). It examines diversity-related questions that applicants may ask, appropriate responses for interviewers to provide, and methods for interviewers to address diversity during an interview. Participants gain additional insights from diverse applicants related to the work environment and interviewers’ behaviors for creating a more effective and welcoming interview process for all applicants. It consists of lessons 9-11.
Lesson 9: Illegal Questions and Other Potential Problem Situations
Lesson 10: Addressing Diversity During an Interview
Lesson 11: Additional Tips and Suggestions from Diverse Applicants
Mini Modules:
These shorter modules include key lessons from the three main modules and focus mainly on racial/ethnic diversity.
MOVING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS TO A CONSCIOUS LEVEL
Identifies unconscious bias related to cultural diversity at both the individual and system levels. It presents numerous examples of bias from diverse perspectives and explores ways systemic bias can exist in an interview team and the hiring process. Methods are presented to help interviewers eliminate bias and lift barriers for individuals of diverse backgrounds.
It contains a portion of the material from Lessons 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the longer Integrating Diversity and Inclusion into the Hiring Process Program – Module One, with a focus on racial/ethnic diversity.
CULTURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS FOR INTERVIEWING
Defines cultural competencies and skills necessary for interviewers and hiring managers to develop inclusive interviewing practices. Methods are discussed for integrating diversity and cultural competencies into the interviewer’s style and the structure of the interview process. It will help interviewers see beyond their biases and cultural misunderstandings to evaluate applicants on their true skills, knowledge, and abilities, and react appropriately if an applicant unexpectedly discloses sensitive personal information.
It contains a portion of the material from Lessons 5 and 6 in the longer Integrating Diversity and Inclusion into the Hiring Process Program – Module Two, with a focus on racial/ethnic diversity.
HOW TO ASK INCLUSIVE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Examines interviewers’ expected responses to commonly asked interview questions that may go unmet due to unconscious bias, reasons why these questions might be difficult for diverse applicants to answer, and explores alternative methods for asking more inclusive interview questions. Guidelines are presented for ways interviewers can help diverse applicants feel more welcomed and comfortable during the interview, which in turn will allow interviewers to obtain more complete responses to their questions.
It contains material mainly from Lesson 8, and examples from Lessons 7 and 9, of the longer Integrating Diversity and Inclusion into the Hiring Process Program – Modules Two and Three.
